About
Travel to Europe to learn about wine history, production and sensory evaluation in Tuscany, the historical heart of Italian wine culture. This intensive 18-day course takes place in the Tuscan hill town of Cortona, where the University of Georgia has been hosting study abroad programs for over 38 years.
Cortona is the perfect place to experience Italian culture while learning about the economic and historical significance of wine and the science of its production. Students will share dorm rooms on campus in a renovated 15th century monastery and dinners in a local family-run restaurant.
The course is co-taught by professors from the Departments of Horticulture, Plant Pathology and Food Science & Technology. You'll study the health implications of wine consumption, characteristics of different grape varieties, cultivation techniques, grapevine diseases, the effects of insects, and many other aspects of wine production. Participants also explore the aesthetics of wine: identifying common taste components of red and white wines, terminology, identifying common varietals by sensory analysis, and learning to make appropriate wine/food pairings.
Enrollment is limited to 30 students, so apply early.
