About
This interdisciplinary program combines intense lectures and field/lab work in Athens with direct field eperience in Costa Rica studying insect and bird natural history in tropical ecosystems. The program includes insect taxonomy and field ornithology components in rain forest and cloud forest species as well as extensive research field problems. Students will obtain a meaningful international experience relevant to their program of study in such a way as to enhance their global awareness of environmental and cultural issues through the use of insects and birds as teaching tools, coupled with structured public outreach experiences.
The international portion of the course begins in Costa Rica's capital, San Jose. From there you will travel to the UGA Costa Rica Campus in San Luis and see pre-montane tropical forest insects and birds first-hand as well as participate in public outreaches with school children. You will then travel to LaSelva Biological Station in Puerto Viejo. The trip will conclude in Manuel Antonio National Park on the Pacific coast where you wil tour estuaries and mangrove swamps. The trip includes site visits to INBIO, Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, San Luis Waterfall, Arenal Volcano, the Sarapiqui River, and the University of Costa Rica.
