About
This course focuses on the complex relationships between the environment and production of agricultural commodities including wood and fiber, and the sustenance of non-consumptive resources use. Natural resource management issues often share similarities among different countries but are embedded in different cultures and environments. The importance of these issues increases in magnitude when the countries involved are international leaders such as Brazil and the US.
This 21-day study abroad program focuses on the nexus between the environment and development in Brazil, and how these factors affect the sustainability of the Amazon basin and other major regions.
Students will first travel to Recifé, where agricultural production is bountiful and the growing economy supports a lively population. Students will spend time with faculty and students from Brazilian universities visiting vast sugar cane plantations, eucalyptus plantations, remnant Atlantic rain forests, and coral reefs. Thereafter, students will travel to the Amazon region, from where they will depart for a once-in-a-lifetime experience boating down the legendary Amazon River. Students will have a chance to explore a bauxite mine, fish in the Amazon, and walk through a tropical rain forest canopy. By the end, participants will have greater insight into the natural resource management issues facing Brazil, the US, and a globalizing planet.
